Favorite Species: Brown Trout
Favorite Fly: The Bumble Bee
Favorite Fly Fishing Book Other Than A River Runs Through It: N/A
Carla lives in Townsend, Montana with her husband AJ, two cats, two poodles, peacocks, chickens, and guinea fowl. With Ohio farming roots, Carla’s love for animals comes as no surprise. After completing her in Animal Science degree she and AJ relocated to Montana. She worked with a cattle breed registry and for the conservation district before beginning her administrative work with onWater. Encouraged by a previous coworker, Carla took it upon herself to learn to fly fish using resources such as You Tube. Cast by cast and fish by fish her fly fishing confidence grew. With her free time, Carla enjoys hiking in solitude. “In Montana you can hike for miles and not see a single person. You have the whole forest or mountain to yourself.” Carla hopes to add llamas to her family for carrying gear on long backpacking trips. Now she just has to get AJ onboard.

Favorite Species: Native Brook Trout
Favorite Fly: Galloup’s Peanut Envy
Favorite Fly Fishing Book Other Than A River Runs Through It: Dances with Trout by John Gierach or the “Longest Silence” Thomas McGuane, it depends on the mood
Cole grew up near the renowned trout rivers in West Virginia. His father taught him to fish at a young age, but Cole focused heavily on sports until an injury in high school. After two intense surgeries, he stepped away from sports and rediscovered fly fishing. The local rivers were slick making wade fishing difficult and dangerous. Cole overcame his fears by slowly testing his comfort levels in the river. “I was in a stream and I would hit a hatch. I felt like I was the only one out there. I got into the groove and just existed. The more I did it, the more I fell in love with it.” After studying Adventure Media in college and working for Barstool Sports in marketing, Cole was hired by onWater. He now serves as onWater’s Social Media Manager. Cole loves playing the guitar, tying flies, reading, and playing with his dogs. With an upbringing immersed in nature, moving into an apartment and to a city wasn’t easy. “It is when you are away from fishing that you figure out it’s for you.” Cole and his father still find time to fish, they are each other’s favorite fishing partners.

I had a fishing rod in hand by the time I started walking.” Drew has a lifelong passion for all things fishing. He believes every species offers a different experience and challenge. “It has become a full blown obsession.” Throughout his career, Drew has worked a variety of different positions at various fly fishing companies, including Simms Fishing Products, Umpqua, and most recently as a map curator at onWater. Collaborating with other anglers and learning about rivers across the country has Drew confessing onWater often doesn’t feel like a job at all. Drew moved from Montana to Colorado a few years ago and although he misses the solitude Montana offers, he believes the more populated fisheries have made him a better angler. Drew’s parents taught him to be deliberate and to approach every endeavor wholeheartedly. This mindset is apparent in not only Drew’s fishing but also in his work at onWater.

Favorite Fly Fishing Book Other Than A River Runs Through It: The River Why by David James Duncan
Eric is a self-proclaimed fishing and data addict. “My mind has been cluttered with fishing my whole life. And to get to many of these places I’ve had to geek-out with maps,” he says. In his late twenties, Eric moved west from Minnesota to Montana. Initially he balanced guiding on the Missouri and Blackfoot Rivers with his profession in the environmental protection industry. Working two jobs and with limited free time, Eric eventually decided to quit guiding and fish exclusively for fun. Eric loves traveling nationally and internationally, always incorporating fishing into his travel itinerary. After pursuing climate change and public health professionally for 23 years, Eric shifted his career and chose to prioritize family, fishing, and mental health. Always accompanied by his trusty golden retriever, Winston, he explores new waters and techniques pursuing fish on the fly. At onWater, he finds meaning and purpose in applying the professional skills he developed in his previous career to his new job helping the public enjoy the wonderful act of fly fishing.

With a Bachelor of Science in biology-mathematics and professional experience in photojournalism, Gloria works as a guide, writer, photographer, and OnWater curator. Gloria followed her curiosities around the globe to Chile to study salmon farming, to New Zealand to study the introduction of trout, and most recently to Montana to study cowboys and cutthroats. Gloria is fueled by her passion for environmental and social justice; she incorporates these topics into her pursuit of fish. Despite her Spanish roots and insatiable travelbug, Gloria finally settled in Montana with her trusty Aussie-doodle, Berto. Together they fish and photograph their adventures one river at a time.

Favorite Species: Brown Trout
Favorite Fly: Goldie
Favorite Fly Fishing Book Other Than A River Runs Through It: Chop Wood, Carry Water by Joshua Medcalf. While it’s not a “fly fishing” book, it taught me to embrace the challenge of my fly fishing career goals each day. And most importantly to develop a heart posture of gratitude while embracing those challenges, because there really isn’t a better industry to be working in!
Ria began fly fishing on the banks of the Missouri River accompanied by her father, a British angler who found a home in Great Falls, Montana. When Ria was still in elementary school her father passed from cancer. This tragedy motivated her medical studies and a ten-year career as an EMT. Fly fishing was Ria’s saving grace during this inevitably stressful job. After fishing with a female outfitter in the area, Ria’s curiosity for guiding grew. She worked two full-time EMT jobs, saved for her first drift boat, and in the summer of 2021 logged over a hundred days of guiding on the Missouri River. She has found gratifying work through guiding and her involvement with Mending Waters, an organization devoted to the well-being of veterans through fly fishing. Ria’s six-year-old son Kolton is her best fishing buddy. By fishing at his pace and stocking the tackle box with candy, she instilled the same love for fishing in Kolton as her father instilled in her. When she isn’t hard at work with onWater, you can find Ria rowing down the river, netting Kolton’s trophy trout, and keeping her two boat dogs out of too much trouble.
